Thanks to my pal Vicki Cook of Bunny’s Blog for alerting me to the latest video in this series, created by The Humane Society of the United States.

I would ordinarily have just linked to Bunny’s Blog but this time needed to give you fair warning: Vicki’s current post addresses a very important issue but includes a couple of upsetting pictures of puppy mill dogs (which might make you want to kill yourself and therefore defeat the purpose of this series). It’s my policy not to post graphic pictures here or link to them without a heads up. So with that caveat: Petland USA Says It Will Continue Selling Pets.

  1. Edie – I understand why you wouldn’t want to show the photos, and I think it’s important to give people a heads-up before they visit my blog. However, I wanted to show my support for Mary’s campaign asking Petland to stop selling puppy mill dogs.

BTW- I love the video series, and I’ll keep my eye out for more to send your way!

    1. This was a really tough call for me, Vicki. Mary is my friend and colleague on Animal Cafe and the Petland issue is very important to me; I’ve blogged about it and completely support the cause. And I respect the decision to show those images; they have a strong impact. At some point, I’m going to have to blog about my banning of graphic images here; it’s kind of like your decision to ban the “F-word” on your blog and I need to explain how I feel.

And any upbeat videos you can send my way would be much appreciated!

  2. Hi,
It is all about money and profit. Petland will continue selling pets because it is highly profitable. I have no problem with you showing graphic material. Sometimes people need to be shocked to take a stand. See if PETA can help out anyway.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    1. You’re right about the greed, Jim. But PETA is just as bad (which is a whole other topic). I have a problem with *me* showing graphic material; people can get shocked somewhere else.

  3. I love that video. I’m glad you posted it. Especially since it showed dogs in their real world exuberance.

As far as the puppy mill campaign goes, I think we need a wide range of approaches to help animals. Shocking people with the horrors of puppy mills is one way. Encouraging people to discover the joys of adopting a shelter pet is another.

Thanks for adding your piece to the cause. It’s a great complement to the Petland campaign.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I know I don’t need to justify why I won’t show graphic images but the topic has been on my mind since the whole Patrick (starved dog) phenomenon and I’ve been wanting to write about it. Easier said than done…

  4. This video is just so happy! I love that is shows adorable little puppies in a shelter environment. So many people believe you can only adopt older, mixed breed dogs with issues and that to get a puppy, you have to go to a pet store. This proves otherwise in such a positive way. Thanks for sharing it, Edie and Bunny!

  5. Everyone has got to stand for something. You’re right, I can “get shocked somewhere else”.

It’s nice to see an uplifting video about animals in need once in a while. You should rescue a pet because you are excited about it and it is fun not out of guilt.
