Frankie speaks!

My friend Karyn, greyhound rescuer, foodie, and generally fun person, asked me if she could interview Frankie because he is the inspiration for my new book, Am I Boring My Dog (and because I suspect she often prefers speaking to dogs over speaking to humans). I usually try to shield him from publicity — see my September 3 post — but Karyn’s Greyhound Injury Fund site is the perfect place for any pup to find his voice. Here are  her two particular pals, the late, great Painter (who is in my book) and diva dog Lily.

And here’s an excerpt from Frankie’s interview:

KZ: Please tell me a little bit about your life before you came to Edie Jarolim’s house.

Frankie: I don’t like to talk about that. It’s hard to imagine how the people I was with could have abandoned me after I spent five years with them. I’m adorable — let’s face it — and housebroken. Not to mention extremely bright. What could I possibly have done so wrong as to make my people leave me to fend for myself on the streets of Tucson?

Am I Boring My Dog: The Final Video

Frankie was very antsy last night, roaming around the house and pacing. He even curled up and slept on my stomach for comfort — an unprecedented move. Clearly he was having a bad case of nerves. But it’s here at last, Am I Boring My Dog? and the final video trailer. I think the videographers, Open Lense Productions, did a bang up job. And, no question, Frankie is a star!

Tell me what you think. I’m old enough to remember how pissed off people were when a similar trick was pulled on Dallas — you know, when Bobby Ewing came out of the shower. Do you feel had by the idea that Frankie didn’t actually travel to all those places? Disturbed by the notion that I may indeed be boring him? All comments welcome.

Of all the dog cards…

Talk about coincidences. My much blogged-about best friend, Clare, pictured below with me and Frankie on our recent trip to San Diego, just called in great excitement.

Clare, Frankie & Me at Sally's

Clare, Frankie & Me at Sally's

It seemed that Clare had just received a birthday card, and of all the possibilities, she got the one featuring Frankie, produced by Borealis Press. It was sent by a friend who didn’t personally know Frankie (though naturally she’d heard of him), much less that he was on a card. Indeed, she was a bit dubious of Clare’s claim, so this post will serve as proof.

Borealis Press card

Now I’ve never been fond of Henry David Thoreau, quoted on the front of the card. In case you can’t read the small print it says “Live the life you’ve imagined.” I’ve always thought Thoreau was a big poseur, telling everyone to live the life they imagined from Walden Pond while his mother did his laundry. But I digress. I didn’t choose the quote, but it’s a wonderful picture, taken by a wonderful photographer, Amy Haskell, whose picture of her dog, Elvis, was featured in my dogs in sunglasses series, an early feature of this ever-evolving blog.

Hip-ElvisSpeaking of my blog’s evolution, today I optimistically added a Media page, to reflect the second interview/article in two days, this one with the TucsonCitizen.com.

Dogs in Space

Historically, dogs haven’t fared very well in outer space. Although the fact was covered up until much later, the most famous of the Russian pups, Laika, almost certainly died within a few hours of going into orbit. The (collective) cosmodogs got a stamp devoted to them:

DogsHead

And Laika got a statue:

Laika

Cold comfort, I say. And I suspect so would they.

Therefore, it is with a great deal of trepidation that I viewed Frankie’s latest adventures as a spokesdog for Am I Boring My Dog:

Where’s Frankie?

I’ve devoted several days to discussing purebreds and breeders, but anyone who reads this blog knows where my heart lies.

Frankie is living proof that mixed breed rescues rock.

I mentioned that no dogs were harmed in the creation of the video promos for Am I Boring My Dog. Here’s a behind-the-scenes still for promo #4 (see Tropical & Tempest Tossed Frankie).

Who's that human?

Who's that human?

That shot is atypical in that I don’t have my hands on Frankie’s butt.

And here are some preview shots of the next video, coming out on Tuesday. Anyone care to guess where Frankie is?

Where am I?

Where am I?

Oh, oh! I don't think it's Kansas

Uh, oh! I don't think I'm in Kansas anymore

The first one who writes in to my comments section with the correct answer gets a copy of my new book. That’ll be a teaser to the big book giveaway contest, coming tomorrow. Start thinking about books that would bore a dog.

Update: We have a winner! Mick Roberts, creator of Pawsville, came up with the correct answer. Frankie is hovering over Easter Island.

Tropical & Tempest-Tossed Frankie: The Video

Here it is at last: YouTube video No. 4 for AM I BORING MY DOG.

Sure, the still photos were cool, but the music and motion definitely add zing. Speaking of adding, I might have to add Tropical Frankie– and Tempest Tossed Frankie –  to a new poll. What do you think?

The adventure continues…

Frankie has been out of touch in recent weeks. I suspect he’s been spending too much time on the beach, not enough time selling Am I Boring My Dog. But as the final countdown to the book publication date begins (only 15 days left!), the dispatches have begun coming in again.

Who says terriers can't surf?

Who says terriers can't surf?

Okay, at least I spot the books tucked away with the beach ball. But what a little publicity hound!

I'm ready for my close up!

I'm ready for my close up!

I’m glad to see he’s left Hawaii — Frankie, don’t even joke about spending your time there looking for the birth certificate – and has gotten back to the world book tour.

It was great while it lasted

It was great while it lasted

But what’s this? A storm on the horizon?

No one can say I didn't come prepared!

No one can say I didn't come prepared!

This is pretty frightening! I’m glad I got these after the fact; I would have been terribly worried.

I'm a desert dog -- I hate this!

I'm a desert dog -- I hate this!

Oh, Frankie, I’m so relieved you’re okay!

Ah, blue skies again!

Ah, blue skies again!

But where in the world are you?

Stay tuned…

The truth about cats & dogs

Or at least the truth about one cat, Luna, and one dog, Frankie. It’s the love that dare not speak its name, an interspecies romance.

I blame the French.

Yes, Frankie’s latest adventure in selling AM I BORING MY DOG took him to Paris.

paris4

He didn’t tell me precisely what he did there aside from bookselling, but I have evidence that wine was involved.

paris1

I knew enough to cherchez la femme. Et voila and mon dieu (and that pretty much exhausts my high school French): une chatte!

paris 5

What exactly happened? Frankie’s not saying. In fact, he’s looking rather above it all, like he’s moving on.

paris2

What a dog! Well, as long as he’s doing his job…

Check out his latest adventures on YouTube.

Incidentally, because of his newfound Gallic hauteur — not to mention his success with the ladies — Frankie decided not to pursue PeoplePets.com anymore. He now wants to hang with Francesca and Sharkey, Martha Stewart’s pups, and join them on the Daily Wag. What say you, Martha and pals? Frankie’s a very classy dog.

Bad to the bone

Frankie was in a funk. Why wasn’t he getting the media attention he deserved, he wondered, after his stellar YouTube debut? I told him I tried again to get him into PeoplePets.com on Twitter, sending them a link of him in full cowboy regalia. I was sure that smug head turn at the end would convince them.

No bites, as it were.

So, he decided, no more Mr. Nice Dog. He grabbed his Doggles and biker gear and hit the road.

Harley1

Oh, oh, he got separated from his pack…

Harley2

But, in search of a place that would recognize his incredible animal magnetism, he found his way to Hollywood.

Harley3

And even managed to get up a billboard for AM I BORING MY DOG.

Harley4

Who’s a good dog after all?
