Old friends

I don’t know that the fact the random machine chose such a perfect winner of my gourmet pet treat contest makes me believe that there is order to the universe.  I do know that sometimes even a cynic like me is brought to her knees.  Emily S. sent in this picture of her 90-year-old mother with the pup who will be munching the pumpkin and peanut butter goodies. Emily describes her 11-year-old pit bull, Ozzy, as “kind of crippled himself.”

Ozzy visits several residents of the nursing home where Emily’s mother lives, so perhaps it’s no surprise that he needs the occasional nap. Clearly this beneficiary of his attentions doesn’t mind that he’s sleeping on the job. In fact, I suspect that, if he wasn’t resting his head on the hand that’s not holding his paw, she would be wrapping Ozzy in the afghan.

While you’re here, there’s another contest you can enter, for the World’s Cutest Pet Carrier. Who knows? The winner might be equally deserving — and in any case will  be practicing car safety.

  1. That is too adorable! It’s really in the nature of all dogs to be with us though, so it doesn’t surprise me one bit. We are like peas in a pod- they need us and we need them. ♥

  2. Uh, are you sure that’s a pitbull? Looks a lot like the boxer my family used to have. Despite their appearance, boxers can be the sweetest, most tolerant dogs around (my brother used to prove that).

    1. His snout is a little boxer-ish, but he is indeed an American pit bull terrier. He was rescued, by Spindletop Rescue in Texas, from a cretin accused of dogfighting and has been with me for almost 10 years.

  3. What a sweet photo! It reminds me that I’ve been meaning to take my dog Rosie to a nursing home for visits – I know it really cheers some of the residents up that live there. Thanks for my reminder 🙂

  4. So sweet and beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. I wish more people could see this photo.
I can completely relate to the “brought to her knees” comment.

  5. Oh my…sweet overload….This just proves (to me at least) that agressive dogs are made, not born into it. Their faces speak to their mutual adoration….sure is a hopeful sight to see for the breed….
