Tina the toy poodle is a puppy mill survivor, and a bit of a miracle dog. Most of the adults in her puppy mill — the largest in Minnesota — had been released the year earlier, but not Tina, who is about six or seven years old.

No surprise: She is rather shy but she’s coming out of her shell. And she may be the rare dog who doesn’t mind being bathed. Poodles are water dogs after all, and this picture of her after her first bath shows a lift of the chin and a hopeful look in the eyes, as though she’s thinking that maybe being touched is not such a terrible thing.
