Still the one...
Hotel Indigo, San Diego, summer 2009

Some days are tougher than others. This is one of the bad ones. A year ago, for Valentine’s Day, I posted this picture on Facebook and labeled it, “You’re still the one.” Frankie had slowed down, no question, but we were still having fun. He made me laugh every day.

Today I woke up and felt a hole in my soul.

Time heals. This I know. But first loves of every species hold a special place in our hearts. So here’s to you, my funny Valentine. And to all who are feeling sad on this day.

“Stay” takes on a new meaning, doesn’t it?

  1. I think the lesson in losing our first love must surely prepare us for all the other loss along the way. I am so sorry for your loss. I read something the other day, that when we are feeling such sadness it is your dogs way of telling you he is thumping his tail against the door in your heart. He will never leave you.

    1. Thank you — and what a lovely thought. I hope that tail stops thumping soon, though. I’m having a tough time getting out of bed today!

    1. Thank you. Yes, it’s probably my favorite picture. It brings back fun memories (along with being flattering to us both).

  2. I suppose all of us want you to feel better. Pretty sure you will .. when you do.
But I also believe that days like you’re having are a weird little good thing; a kind of honoring of the relationship that existed between you two.
For me, it’s best to just do the tears for as long as I have to. Just thinking of you, Edie.

  3. I remember that picture well. It was wonderful.

I’m sorry it’s a rough day for you. I hope you get a moment of cheer soon. Maybe from your new kitty friend.

    1. Thanks, Pamela. I discovered I’m not feeling well — which, ironically, made me feel better. Knowing my resistance was down made me feel like I wasn’t having a breakdown, that it was the fault of those !@#$%^& germs.

  4. What a great photo to cherish, even more special knowing it was taken on a Valentine’s Day. Hearing Ella’s song to accompany the post, made me sob.
    Sending hugs your way.

  5. I feel your pain….and felt it especially on Valentine’s Day. The day before that our 13 year old beagle Kobi passed away. He was not my first love, but he was a special one. I suppose I will be thinking about this on every Valentine’s Day to come. Hugs to you…..it seems we both probably need them.

    1. I’m so sorry about Kobi. Hugs back to you. I’m glad Kobi sent you an angel to help ease the pain. I’m still waiting for word from Frankie…

  6. Thanks for that post. I lost my beautiful bunny two days ago. I know what that hole in the heart feels like. It is both pain and the emptiness of loss. Most people around don’t understand my pain, they say “its just all little animal”. That, of course, makes me feel even worst. So thanks for sharing ow beautifuly you mourn your dog`s passing.
