Opening soon: Animal Cafe!

It’s been a busy week Chez Frankie.

Food

I’m on the Culinary Commmittee for the Tucson Festival of Books, a mega-literary event that spreads out over the weekend of March 12 and 13. I’m also on two panels, a speaker on “The Critics Table: The Power of the Restaurant Review” and moderator of “Food Writing 101.” It’s going to be a blast, but organizing chefs and cookbook authors is like… well, the proverbial herding of cats. It’ll all get done, it’ll all get done…Deep breaths…

Dogs

There are several major things going on in my dog-related universe, two very much fun (but I can’t give you the details yet), one uplifting, and one nerve wracking.

Fun

  • There is going to be major terrier action on this blog soon: I can only tell you that video, rap, and Dexter’s Ruff Life and Gangs of New Yorkie (we’re talking major cuteness) are involved.
  • I put a teaser out on Facebook recently about a terrific new gig, which I am soon going to be able to reveal  — later this week I hope. I will just say that script writing (!!) and pet travel are involved.

Uplifting

I’m going to be taking part in Help Petfinder Adopt the Internet Day:  March 15, 2011. In honor of Petfinder’s 15th birthday year, the site will host a blog hop devoted to getting the word out about pet adoption and helping homeless pets find homes. They are asking websites and bloggers everywhere to do one simple thing — talk about pet adoption. We can do that!

Nerve Wracking

Today’s the day I drop Frankie off at the vet to get his teeth cleaned and that thing on his gum biopsied. I wrote about it here. Luckily, I’m very, very busy so I can’t devote the entire day to worrying.

Food and Dogs

Okay, this doesn’t actually involve food, except metaphorically, but I couldn’t resist using that heading to introduce an exciting new venture I’m going to be part of: Animal Cafe, an interactive podcast and chat community debuting March 7. You need to go over there to check out the details, but suffice it to say that it’s going to be fun and informative, with great interviews and guests. My focus as a host is going to be pet travel — which is why, among other reasons, I am moving Pet Travel Tuesday to Pet Travel Thursday. Did you even notice it was missing this week? I hope so. Or maybe I hope not. (What is the sound of nerves wracking — maybe like billiard balls?)

  1. ooo…we have a dog cafe here. is this what the post is about? sorry, no time to read right now. just wanted to let you know i’m giving you more work with another Stylish. please drop by to pick it up 🙂 xox

  2. We sure hope everything goes well with the teeth cleaning today! I have to get Riley’s done sometime soon…I’m just waiting until my pocket book can handle it!!

  3. Wow, you’re a busy lady! Congratulations on your new ventures, and I’m looking forward to listening to your travel podcasts on Wednesdays! Sounds like a great lineup.

  4. Here’s hoping the tooth cleaning is not too traumatic, and the biopsy is NEGATIVE for anything bad. That face is too cute for harm to befall it!

I will put March 7 on my calendar to tune into your broadcast, and March 15 to promote Petfinder– not a hard job for me, all my fosters found homes on Petfinder.

As for the terrier action– should we be terrierfied? (Okay, lock me in the kennel and throw away the key for that one.)

  5. FYI–I DID notice no travel post on Tuesday! Your new gig with other favorite bloggers of mine sounds fabulous!

Can’t wait to hear the rest of your fun news later this week—I hope.

I’m in for the March 15 blog hop.

And, wishing all the best for Frankie today.

  6. Edie – thanks for the info about the petfinder blog hop! I’m super excited because I love and recommend petfinder to everyone and anyone I know – so thanks again!

  7. Just a quick update — I called the vet and Frankie got through the teeth cleaning okay! He’s “still a bit out of it” according to the receptionist.

I didn’t start badgering her until I heard that report, and then I asked, “As far as you know, Frankie is not toothless, is he?” This made her laugh, but didn’t elicit any information. She did say that if he had any teeth extracted, the vet would give them to me in a little bag. I don’t know how I feel about that. What should I do with them — put them under his pillow for the tooth fairy? Frankie is a cynical dog. He doesn’t believe in Santa Claus either.

I’m going in to pick him up from the vet in another 3 1/2 hours. I’ll report back.

Thanks for all your good wishes!

  8. Wow, you’ve been up to a lot. Are you sure you see a poodle as Wonder Woman? I see Edie as Wonder Woman.

Looking forward to the new Animal Cafe. I’ve just saved it on my feed reader. Of course you know I hate you for adding one more interesting thing to my schedule.

Hope you get good news back from the doctor soon and that Frankie arrives home with sparkling teeth and a clean bill of health.

    1. Ha! If you saw my desk, you would never think of me as Wonder Woman. But I thank you for the thought. I do need to correct you, however. I was not the one who voted for a poodle as Wonder Woman (unless in contrast to a German shepherd). I see her as sleeker, an exotic breed like a Visla or Basenji.

Thanks for the good wishes! I’m heading out now to my vet to retrieve the poor sleepy boy. I’ll report back.

  9. Congratulations Edie on all the busy in your life – sounds like good stuff and the Animal Cafe will be awesome. I hope Frankie is doing okay!

  10. So exciting! So many good things. I can’t wait to see how they all turn out! Thanks for the links.

I hope Frankie’s vet visits went better than expected. I will be thinking of you both.

  11. Thank you all for your good wishes.

    As for Frankie:
    — The vet said he was 95% certain that “the thing” was scar tissue from an earlier infection. Weighed against the expense, he didn’t see a need to biopsy it. If he didn’t, I didn’t.
    — He did great under anesthesia — the best of the 9 or 10 dogs who had their teeth cleaned that day.
    — The teeth….well, that was not so good. I can’t say precisely how many were extracted but they were presented to me to show me why they needed to go. Ugh. As the vet said — well, dogs have 43 teeth. Frankie has at least 30 left, I’d say, but I haven’t gone in to count yet.
    — I will go in to clean as soon as the gums heal. Obsessively.
    — He was making sad little noises last night but he was fairly lively. Today there were far fewer sad sounds, far more barks. And a good appetite. Frankie’s back, with a slightly roomier mouth!

  12. Passing by to lurk on all your blogs I missed, and so glad Frankie is alright and back to barking with a little more room. You must be reliefed “the thing” turned out to be nothing!

You are one cool lady to continue blogging AND supporting me with Viva, while you must have been worrying a lot about Frankie and what “the thing” could be. Hope you don’t burry yourself in too much work, but it does help doesn’t it 🙂

The Animal Cafe sounds like a very exciting initiative. Appreciate the concept with podcasts a lot, it closes the timezone gap with the fans overseas. And whenever I cannot sleep on a wednesday, I will be there.

    1. Welcome back! Nice to see you again.

Yes, work does help and, while I felt a bit upset about “the thing,” I had a feeling it wasn’t anything bad. I was most upset that I had let Frankie’s teeth go for so long (to the point that I didn’t a growth in his mouth. As for supporting you with Viva — it’s not exactly a hardship to write a few lines and I know, having been there with the diabetes, how stressful getting the correct diagnosis and treatment regimen can be. I was more than glad to share whatever I learned from the process.
